Can Veterans Use the GI Bill® to Pay for PMP Certification Training?

Yes. Eligible veterans may be able to use GI Bill® benefits to
pay for an approved PMP® (Project Management Professional)
exam-preparation course and receive reimbursement for the PMP®
certification exam. PMP® is a professional certification administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). For qualifying licensing and certification tests, the VA currently reimburses up to $2,000 per test. The amount available for training depends on the veteran’s specific VA education benefit, eligibility percentage, remaining entitlement, and whether the training program is approved.

Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Step 1: Establish Your Eligibility

Before anything else, apply for VA education benefits and obtain your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). This document confirms what benefits you’re entitled to and is the first step in the enrollment process.

Already used your GI Bill® at another school? No problem. You can typically provide your existing eligibility information and complete the necessary steps to transfer to a new school or program.

Once your eligibility is established, Vets2PM Academy can help you enroll in an approved program and handle the required enrollment certification with the VA.

Step 2: Understand What’s Covered

Not all training costs are created equal in the eyes of the VA, so it helps to know what you’re working with.

• PMP® training costs: GI Bill® benefits may cover an approved PMP® exam-preparation course, depending on the veteran’s eligibility, benefit type, remaining entitlement, and the program’s VA approval.
• Exam and simulator costs: Many of our approved programs also include the PMP® certification exam and PMP® certification exam simulator, depending on which program you choose.
• Your specific benefit amount: How much the VA covers depends on your benefit type, eligibility percentage, remaining entitlement, and the approved program.

As a Vets2PM guideline, if you have roughly two weeks of remaining entitlement, that may be enough to cover one of our approved certification prep courses, depending on your benefit and the specific program.

Who Qualifies?

GI Bill eligibility is determined by the VA based on factors like your qualifying military service and which education benefit you’re using. As a general guideline, veterans with at least 36 months of qualifying active-duty service are eligible for 100% of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefit — though individual circumstances can affect this.

Spouses and dependents, take note: if you’ve received transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits, you may also be able to use them toward an approved Vets2PM Academy program. The transfer must meet Department of Defense and VA requirements, and the VA has the final say on eligibility.

What About Licensure and Accreditation?

You may see terms like “licensed,” “accredited,” and “VA-approved” used around career schools, so it is worth knowing these different things mean:

• Licensure means a school has met the requirements of the applicable state agency to legally operate and offer its programs.
• Accreditation is a separate review conducted by an accrediting organization.
• VA approval determines whether you can actually use your VA education benefits for a specific program.

Vets2PM Academy is licensed in the states where it operates and is approved for VA education benefits for its eligible programs.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Processing times vary depending on the VA, your benefit status, and whether additional documentation is needed. If you already have an active COE, you can typically move through enrollment and certification faster.

Once everything is submitted and processed, Vets2PM reimbursements generally take about 14 days, although processing times can vary. And if you’re attending through one of our approved Army Career Skills Program (CSP) locations (Forts Bliss and Campbell), payment can process almost immediately.

Can the GI Bill® Pay for the PMP Exam?
